We are currently looking for 2 x Data Scientists for a large government department based in the Brisbane CBD. This is an initial 4 month contract with a strong chance of extension. This position will support the Director of Analytics in setting up the 'Centre of Insights, Data sharing and Analytics (CIDA) for the department and whole of government, which is a program of work that will focus on building capability in government information sharing, data science and data analytics whilst continuing to operate its traditional information brokerage services.

As a Data Scientist you will:
  • Provide insight into leading analytic practices, design and lead iterative learning and development cycles, and ultimately produce new and creative analytic solutions that will become part of our core deliverables.
  • Work with cross-functional team members to identify and prioritize actionable, high-impact insights across a variety of core business areas.
  • Lead applied analytics initiatives that are leveraged across the breadth of our solutions for Queensland Government. You will research, design, implement and validate cutting-edge algorithms to analyze diverse sources of data to achieve targeted outcomes.
  • Provide expertise on mathematical concepts for the broader applied analytics team and inspire the adoption of advanced analytics and data science across the entire breadth of our organisation.
  • Advocate, evangelize and build data-fuelled products that help our customers improve outcomes.
  • Link complex data sets together and support the creation of data sharing platforms, warehouses and data lakes.
  • Actively participate in knowledge management strategies including documentation and training, coaching and mentoring permanent staff.
Requirements:
  • An accomplished in the use of: R, MATLAB, SPSS or SAS, BI tools such as Tableau and Microstrategy, relational databases, Hadoop-based data mining frameworks, SQL, Python, Java and C/C++.
  • You have a Ph.D. or Master's Degree in operations research, applied statistics, data mining, machine learning, physics or a related quantitative discipline with a working knowledge of CS.
  • You need to be experienced in the full life cycle of data science. From identifying, cleansing and extracting data. To linking data sets together, supporting the creation of a data sharing platform, warehouse and data lakes. Providing advanced and complex insight analysis across the data lakes and presenting finding to non-technical audiences.  
  • High level experience delivering world-class data science outcomes, you have a unique blend of statistical modelling, analytical, mathematical, technical and engineering skills. Also a deep understanding of statistical and predictive modelling concepts, machine-learning approaches, clustering and classification techniques, and recommendation and optimization algorithms.
  • You work with others to develop, refine and scale data management and analytics procedures, systems, workflows, best practices and other issues.
