Talent International are currently recruiting for an experienced Finance Officer to work for an Australian Federal Government client based in Sydney.  This position is initially a 6 month contract with the potential of being extended. This position is federal government grade of APS 6 and if paying an hourly rate of $51.50 per hour plus superannuation.

Purpose of Position:

The APS6 Finance Officer is accountable under limited direction to undertake complex finance related work that is guided by legislation, policies, procedures, standards, methodologies and precedents. The position will perform various activities within one or more of the core finance functions of the Finance and Corporate Service Division, that may include, financial accounting, management accounting, finance business partnering, financial analytics and scheme finance. The position is a team membership position that may be required to perform work that involves team leadership with supervision or management responsibilities requiring the setting of priorities, managing workflows and outcomes of a finance team. 

Key Responsibilities:
  • Accountable to provide accurate operational and financial advice and support across a range of activities within one or more of the core finance functions 
  • Developing plans and objectives for short-term finance projects;
  • Setting priorities and ensuring quality outputs for their own work and the work area;
  • Monitoring emerging financial issues and identifying likely risks and impacts; and
  • Developing recommendations and solutions to mitigate, correct and prevent reoccurrence of financial risks.
  • Assume responsibility for complex finance projects, work programs or initiatives that have operational significance to the work area, Branch or the Finance and Corporate Services Division.
  • Coordinate and support others working on specific finance projects or work programs; facilitating and encouraging effective performance against specific objectives and outcomes; providing in-depth advice for specialist finance activities.
  • Maintain an awareness of the requirements of their assigned core finance function, monitor changes in the work environment that may impact on the deliverables of the function; contribute to business improvement strategies to change workplace practices and procedures
  • Work within a core finance function, interpret and apply legislation, policies, procedures, standards, methodologies and precedents to their work activities; anticipating problems and contributing to issues management; escalating very complex financial issues to a team leadership position within the Division
  • Works with a level of independence, subject to limited direction guided by policies, accepted standards and precedents; applying some latitude in modifying practices and procedures to produce accurate work that requires little or no revision before finalisation.
  • Consolidate, assess and evaluate available information on complex or escalated finance issues that have a medium to high impact on a core finance function; make decision to select and recommend an appropriate course of action.
  • Identify complex finance related problems or issues, use established or innovative methods to resolve or mitigate.
  • Manage relationships with stakeholders, consult, advise, anticipate and respond to their needs and expectations to achieve outcomes and facilitate cooperation in the context of complex or sensitive finance issues.
  • Communicate and negotiate to maximise cooperation in a wide range of complex and sensitive financial issues, requiring persuasion and sensitivity.
To Be Successful
  • You must have previous experience in a similar position, preferable in the public sector (Local, State or Federal)
  • Tertiary level qualifications in Accounting, Finance or equivalent academic specialisation.
  • Possess (or be working towards) membership of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (CA), Certified Practising Accountants (CPA) or other equivalent professional finance bodies (or relevant postgraduate degree) together with relevant direct finance experience.
