June Chua

  • The Remote Draft Survey project (RDS) blends machine vision and GPS data to provide real-time centimetre-precision measurement of cargo ships deployed to ports across Australia.
  • RDS is a game changer in the safe loading of ships, reducing the exposure of people and ships to hazards. RDS significantly reduces the down time resulting from the many centuries old draft surveying process so assets worth billions of dollars don't sit idle.
  • Architecturally, multiple components bring the system to life.
  • Sensor packs containing high-end machine vision cameras, PTUs and other sensors feed raw images and data to high-performance machine vision processing services written in MATLAB and C++ that output key metrics into a SQL Server database, and writes out video streams.
  • GPS devices located around the ship transmit high-precision position data by radio to a service written in C#. This service applies digital signal processing algorithms and passes the data through mathematical models of the ship to produce more key metrics sent to the database.
  • Finally, web applications written in ASP.NET and running on IIS let draft surveyors and ship-loader operators observe a multitude of data and video streams, and issue commands to the services in real time.
  • But we're not finished yet! We have some innovative ideas to more than double the value of the project that we need help to convert into reality.

  • We are a very small team of experienced engineers with 50 years combined experience in developing patented innovative systems that combine software, sensors and electronics in a range of industries including automotive, telecommunications and mining.
  • We collaborate with the larger Automation and Technology team of approximately 70 experienced hardware and software engineers, to help get to the optimal solution faster.
  • We like to get things done, but do things well. We like to be flexible, but we also believe that process is paramount - and that we are masters of that process, not the other way around.
  • While we each have responsibilities, we are not afraid to roll up our sleeves to help each other because we succeed and fail as a team.

  • You can see that this is not an ordinary run-of-the-mill project or team! If the description above excites you, we'd love to hear from you.
  • If you are a software developer with extensive experience in at least one of the languages we use and have a track record of picking up new projects and languages super-fast, we'd love to hear from you.
  • If you're a mathematical whiz who knows how to implement complex calculations in software, we'd love to hear from you.
  • If you know how to code multi-threaded services that are architectural master pieces, comprehend digital signal processing and real-time systems, we'd love to hear from you.
  • If you have an attitude of getting things done without being micro-managed, making things better both tactically and strategically, and know how to balance the "perfect' solution and the realistic one, we'd love to hear from you.
  • If the end user saying "that's awesome!' is what you code for, we'd love to hear from you.

  • This is an initially 12 month contract role based in Perth CBD
